July 2019 Update: A Midsummer Whitewater Dream!

A Midsummer Whitewater Dream!

Here is your July 2019 update on the flows on the Arkansas River. Members of the Arkansas River Outfitters Association (AROA) have reported river conditions hit a ‘sweet spot’. Guests looking to experience this banner year for whitewater will be happy to hear that the flows are receding. As a result, we will have excellent rafting conditions for the remainder of the summer for all ages and abilities.

“We’re glad to see flows where they are now,” says Kevin Foley, owner of Performance Tours Rafting, “Safety is our number one priority and the current conditions offer the perfect balance between safety and great fun.”

Additionally, with the slow snowmelt that started the season, AROA members are predicting a longer-than-normal season. Above all, that should sustain above-average, manageable flows throughout the summer.

“The Arkansas River is one of the most popular rafting rivers in the country because it offers craftable sections for adventurers of every ability and interest,” said Bob Hamel, executive director of AROA. “Our members are continuously adjusting their offerings to ensure guests have the best possible experience.

Whether they are seeking the big waves of the recently reopened Royal Gorge and Numbers sections or the family-friendly trips in Bighorn Sheep Canyon and Browns Canyon.”

The Arkansas River remains at above-average water levels.  That is to say when compared to previous seasons and minimum ages have returned to normal. These conditions are perfect for those looking to experience that “sweet spot” of Colorado whitewater.

“With 33+ years of guiding whitewater trips in Colorado, we’ve seen the river at all levels,” says Foley, who started Performance Tours in 1986, “In high water years, it’s important to choose an experienced outfitter. Our guides have the most collective experience on the river and are ready to lead incredible whitewater adventures!”
