When we’re off the clock and hungry, these are the top food spots our raft guides actually hit in Buena Vista.

Our Guides’ Favorite Restaurants in Buena Vista:

  • Eddyline Brewery – Wood-fired pizza, stacked burgers, and craft beer brewed at elevation. It’s a classic post-river hang with a lively patio scene.
  • Deerhammer Distillery – Small-batch whiskey distilled right in town. Smooth pours, cozy tasting room, and a solid way to wind down after dinner.
  • The Buena Viking – Scandinavian-inspired comfort food that actually fills you up after a high-output day on the water.
  • Sorrelle Delicatessen - Fresh-made sandwiches, salads, and grab-and-go snacks that are perfect for a river lunch or picnic. Quality ingredients, quick service, and guide-approved.

Local Tip (Dining): Grab a to-go sandwich from Sorelle Delicatessen and head down to Buena Vista Whitewater Park. Lunch tastes better when you’re watching kayakers throw down in the play wave.

Most of our guides stay on property at Performance Tours during the season—but when friends and family come to town, these are the places we recommend.

  • Surf Hotel – Riverfront boutique hotel with mountain-modern design and unbeatable walkability to downtown and the whitewater park.
  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort – Natural hot springs and big Collegiate Peaks views. Ideal for soaking sore muscles after a full day on the Arkansas.
  • Creekside Chalets – Just down the road in Salida. Private, cozy cabins with mountain views and space to spread out. A great fit for families or small groups who want a little more privacy while staying close to town and the river.
  • Camping Options – If you’d rather sleep under the stars, check out Railroad Bridge Campground or snag one of the coveted dispersed campsites along County Road 371. You’ll wake up close to the river with unbeatable mountain views.

Local Tip (Lodging): Dispersed sites next to the Arkansas River along CR 371 are first-come, first-served and fill fast on summer weekends—arrive midweek if you want the prime riverside spots.

When we’re not guiding, here’s how we recharge, explore, and enjoy the valley.

Our Guides’ Favorite Things To Do on a Day Off in Buena Vista

  • Buena Vista Whitewater Park – Even off the clock, we’re here. Surf the play wave, cool off in the river, or stretch out on the rocks and watch the action.
  • Hot Springs Soak – Nothing beats a soak after a big river day. Our go-tos include Mount Princeton Hot Springs, Cottonwood Hot Springs, and Charlotte Hot Springs. Each has a different vibe—from resort-style pools to quieter, more rustic soaking.
  • Comanche Drive-In Theatre – Catch a double feature at the highest drive-in theater in the U.S. Blankets, snacks, mountain air—it’s a classic Colorado night.
  • St. Elmo Ghost Town – One of Colorado’s best-preserved ghost towns, just a scenic drive from BV. Wander historic buildings, explore old mining relics, and soak up a little Wild West history.

Local Tip (Things To Do): For a perfect BV evening, soak in the river at Mount Princeton Hot Springs, then head into town for live music at The Lariat or a show on the lawn at Surf Hotel—that combo is hard to beat.
