If you’re visiting during rafting season, whitewater rafting through the Royal Gorge is an absolute must. There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of navigating Class III to V rapids while surrounded by sheer granite walls towering over the Arkansas River. While rafting steals the spotlight, the Royal Gorge Region offers some of the best hiking in Colorado. From rugged canyon trails to scenic overlooks, these paths make you feel like you own the wilderness.
Popular spots include the Royal Gorge Park trails, Temple Canyon, and Red Canyon Park—each offering unique views and a chance to escape the crowds. Pointe Alta Vista is one of our favorite easy hikes—it’s often overlooked, but gives you a stunning view of the canyon without much effort. Temple Canyon is another go-to. We love hiking there as a family and cooling off in Grape Creek—especially in the heat of summer.

But nothing compares to the thrill of rafting the Arkansas River beneath the towering Royal Gorge cliffs.
One of our top recommendations for guests is Skyline Drive. It’s hands-down one of the best free experiences in Colorado. It only adds about 10–15 minutes to your drive into town, and you can stop to soak in the views before grabbing dinner or heading back to the inn.
For us, summer is water time. We usually start with a small hike—Temple Canyon is a favorite—and let the kids play in Grape Creek. Sometimes we head to Tunnel Drive for a mellow trail with great views.
In the afternoon, we’ll head to the play wave in town. It’s where friends gather, and there’s always someone to paddle with or just hang out by the water. If we’re lucky, we’ll float the river with friends and call it a day well spent.
