Outdoor Adventures to Elevate Your 4th of July in Breckenridge

Whitewater Rafting on the Arkansas or Blue River

If you’re looking for a perfect outdoor adventure to compliment your Fourth of July celebrations in Breckenridge, then whitewater rafting should be at the top of your list. Early July offers ideal whitewater rafting conditions in Colorado, as June’s rapid snow melt has slowed down and water levels are typically at perfect splashy flows.

The Arkansas River is located just a 1 hour and 10 minute scenic drive from Breckenridge, and the scenery and stunning views are reason enough to make a day trip to Buena Vista for rafting. The Blue River—located in Frisco, CO just 10 minute drive north of Breckenridge—is also a popular option for rafting around the Fourth of July. Both Browns Canyon National Monument and the Blue River are moderate rafting tours with class III rapids and are ideal for families and guests at least 7 years old and 50 lbs.

Paddlers looking for a more mellow family float trip can opt for the Bear Creek Family Float on the Arkansas River. Thrill-seekers at least 16 years old can consider taking on the challenging class IV+ rapids of the Numbers in Buena Vista, CO or travel a bit further south to the Royal Gorge for a bucket list rafting adventure.

Performance Tours Rafting, Breckenridge’s first and favorite rafting company, offers half day and full day whitewater rafting tours from our office in Buena Vista, Colorado, Frisco, Colorado and Canon City, Colorado.

If you’re looking for information on where to stay, where to park and what to pack for Fourth of July in Breckenridge, look no further.

For families looking to stay close to the action but with plenty of amenities, we recommend staying at Beaver Run Resort. Beaver Run is at the base of peak 9 and has pools, hot tubs, games, and is walkable to downtown Breckenridge. Grand Timber Lodge and the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 are also two of our favorite Breckenridge resorts with unique amenities like slopeside pools, hot tubs, spas, movie theaters, arcades and more. If you’re planning on traveling with a big group for a family reunion or family gathering and are interested in finding a house rental, Summit Mountain Rentals and Alpine Meadows are both top-notch property management companies who can help you find the perfect property for your group.

Whenever possible, we recommend avoiding the hassle of driving and parking in downtown Breckenridge—especially around the Fourth of July. Each Independence Day, Breckenridge’s Main Street will shut down for the parade festivities, and this can create additional traffic and parking issues. Most hotels offer shuttle services for guests and many property management companies offer properties within walking distance to downtown Breckenridge. Breckenridge also offers a free bus system called Breck Free Ride, which provides locals and visitors with ample access to the surrounding neighborhoods on a consistent and reliable bus schedule. When researching for vacation rental homes in Breckenridge, make sure to ask about the closest Breck Free Ride bus stop!

There are a few essentials that every visitor should bring when visiting Breckenridge over the Fourth of July holiday. Different types of outerwear layers like a waterproof rain jacket, fleece zip up, and medium-weight jacket will come in handy if the weather changes. Sunblock, sunglasses and a hat will always be crucial in Breckenridge, as the town is at 9,600 feet elevation and the sun can be stronger at this altitude. Speaking of altitude, bringing a refillable water bottle is a great way to make sure that you are staying hydrated and drinking enough water. In 2024, Breckenridge passed a ban on single-use plastic water bottles, and launched a campaign to educate visitors about the high quality water you can drink right out of the tap.
